George Washington Carver

Oh, hey, how's it going? I’m just here at the science desk making some Peanut Coffee. I bet you didn’t know that you could make coffee out of Peanuts. Actually you can make hundreds of different things using Peanuts and a major reason for that is because of the work done by a man named George Washington Carver.

In the early 1900’s George Washington Carver became one of the nations most influential educators and agriculture researchers. A true American hero—Carver made an impact on his society by helping farmers improve soils and grow crops w/ low input.

But what Carver is most famous for is his revolutionizing work with the peanut! He created over 300 products using peanuts…of course many of those were food products but did you know George Washington Carver also used peanuts to invent house hold products like laundry soap, medicines like rubbing oil, industrial products like dyes for paints and cloths and even cosmetics like shampoo!

Now if you would like to learn how to make Peanut Coffee check this out…First off you’re going to need a parent or adult to help you with this project. Start with a half cup of peanuts…you probably want to break open these shells and take them out of their shells so we can add them with out getting that fiber in their.

Then your going to want a half cup of wheat or rye which you can buy at a grocery store and then last but not least a half cup of cow peas. You are going to ground these all up, now I have this very cool mortar and pestle that I can do this with but you guys can do this in a blender. Once we’ve broken them up, add them to some boiling water; let it boil for a while, strain it and you got peanut coffee!

Now if you want to learn more about George Washington Carver check out the ATW website at atwonline.org…and that’s it from the Science Desk.
