The French and Indian War

war1

Winston Churchill called it the true first world war. The 7 Years War, better known here as the French and Indian War, changed the future for several nations and set the stage for the American Revolution. It began when a headstrong colonial named George Washington led a provocative mission against the French in western Pennsylvania.

war2

Before long, the French retaliated and war sprang up not only along the distant frontier but on the high seas, in Europe and in India. When it was over, France had lost Canada and the Ohio River valley, all of the lands that would later be included in the Louisiana Purchase, and the lucrative fur trade. England had seized an empire but at a cost it would want to share with its colonies.

Assignment: the World's evergreen show looks at all of those aspects of this important conflict as well as the men and women who continue to bring that age back to life at several of the historic re-enactments staged at French and Indian War forts along Lake Ontario.

CLUES ON THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR

And now itís time for clues to people and places that were important in the French and Indian War:

Our first clue is a location

46 Degrees, 49 minutes north latitude
71 Degrees, 14 minutes west longitude

Quebec City: Quebec City was the site in 1759 of a decisive battle between the French and English armies. After a three month siege, The French general, Montcalm, brought his forces on to the Plains of Abraham from within the city. They met redcoats under General James Wolfe. In a fight that lasted barely half an hour, both generals were wounded and dying but the British won the day and the city. While the 7 Years War of French and Indian War would technically go on for more than three more years, the action at Quebec City was one of the keys to eventual British victory and the loss to France of Canada.

Our second clue is a scrambled letter, two words

George Washington: George Washington was an ambitious but inexperienced Virginia militia officer when he led an expedition in 1754 that would eventually provide the spark for the 7 Years or French and Indian War. While he would later admire the ill-fated English General Edward Braddock, Washington was repeatedly dealt with scorn by subsequent British commanders. That and other experiences during the French and Indian War would prove invaluable after 1776 when Washington would lead the Continental Army against the British in the American Revolution.

And finally, our third clue is a fill in the blanks, three words

Treaty of Paris: Signed on February 10, 1763, the Treaty of Paris (sometimes known as the Peace of Paris) brought a formal end to the 7 Years War. France, England and Spain were the countries most affected by the document. To the British, France gave up claims to all of its territory in New France which included parts of what are now Canada, the Ohio River Valley and New England. It also ceded control of New Orleans and French Louisiana to Spain. Spain gave control of its territory in Florida to the British. The treaty came well after substantial fighting had come to an end. French forces in North America had long since given way to the British who were better supplied and had control of the seas.
